As an artist, I’ve always looked up to those that came before me for inspiration. Whether it’s Picasso, Dali, Khalo, Basquiat, Matisse, whomever! I can somehow tell which artist created that particular piece and that is because these legends all have what you call a signature style. So of course, I had to ask myself, “What’s my style? Can anyone immediately seek out a Katu’s creation!?” *insert thinking emoji* Sadly, however, the answer is No, lol, and I say that because I’m still trying to figuring out what my style is, myself. So, I came up with 5 steps on how to achieve the goal of finding your own art style.
STEP 1: PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!: The key to finding your own style is by simply creating tons and TONS of work. The more you create, the closer your style is to revealing itself.
STEP 2: OBSERVE!: After creating so much work, place all of your pieces together. Whether it’s located on your art website, social media page, in your living room, or studio, take the time to take a step back and observe your work. You will eventually find similarities within your art. It can range from your painting style, your theme, to even your message behind your work. Observe the fine details and I’m sure your signature will come to light.
STEP 3: GET INSPIRED!: This step is where you leave your crib and go out and explore all things art. So hit up your bestie, boo thang, or travel solo dolo, and go do some dope art shit! I live in NY so I already know there are so many places I can travel to get inspiration. We have museums, art galleries, street art, libraries, the park, retail stores, basically anything you can think of, you can easily turn into inspiration. It’s best to find art that will challenge your thinking and motivate you to learn new skills that can improve your own work.
STEP 4: SOCIAL MEDIA! Social media is a gift and a curse. This tool can help define your signature when you are stuck trying to figure it out on your own. Hopefully by now you already have an art page, so viewers should be “liking” and commenting on your pictures. They see your work all the time and they must have a reason as to why they continue to return to your page. So, why not just ask your audience, “What is the most noticeable thing in my art style?” This will create an open dialogue by giving you insight to information you may not have seen for yourself.
STEP 5: CHANGE OF ENVIRONMENT: It is BEST to surround yourself with like minded individuals. As an artist, we feed off of creative vibes! So, whether you find a mentor, join an art agency, enter into art exhibitions, or even socialize with other artists in different fields, it’s important to keep in mind that energy is contagious. You will begin to feel inspired to want more and to experiment with different things because now your eyes are open to so much. Stick to the dreamers, doers, believers, and thinkers, and continue to evolve in your work.
Well there it is folks! I hope those 5 steps helped you to see the light in your work.
We all have a signature style and as long as we continue to create and put ourselves out there, your signature will eventually find you!
